5E SRD Onenote v3.0

I’ve updated the 5E SRD Onenote to Version 3.0, which is quite an overhaul from the previous version.

Every single page has been rebuilt in order to switch to a white-themed background template, which I think looks rather sleek and modern while also appearing slick on the newer app versions of Onenote (or the browser version which does not support page colors).

I’ve gone through and updated all the page reference numbers to make sure they’re up to date with the latest version of the SRD pdf.

The hierarchy of the book is has been changed as . For example, the Spellcasting information, Spell Sorting Lists, and Spell directory all exist in the same Section Group now. Spells have been double-grouped into sections to keep down the number of tabs (which also makes it quicker for people to copy).

I’ve also included links. Links everywhere. Thousands of them. For example, every spell that appears on any of the sorting list is now a link (if the spell is included in the SRD). Every monster name on a sorting list is a link, every spell on those statblocks is a link, even the encounter blocks link back to themselves to save you an extra step while copying them to the combat tracker.

The Character Creation Section Group has been overhauled with a new layout to make sure Races and Classes are now formatted to my liking, while being more consistent with each other.

Protip: Paste those collapsible class features right into the new character sheet templates!

Finally, the entirety of the SRD is now housed in a section group. This lets me isolate it from my Onenote-specific pages and templates, and also lets me store it alongside the two adventures that I’ve included in this release: Death House and A Great Upheaval. By having the SRD as an Appendix like this, you can quickly link to spells/monsters/etc as needed just by wrapping [[tags]] around the names.

Download Notes:

Windows Desktop users of Onenote 2016 with an active Office Subscription can conveniently download and extract the .onepkg file on the sidebar.

For free users of Onenote, click the other link to open the browser version of the notebook and then close the tab or back out of the site. As long as you were signed into the same account that you use for Onenote/Onedrive, then the next time you launch the Onenote and go to File>Open you should see the 5E SRD 3.0 book listed under recent notebooks.

When all else fails, I can use your email to share the notebook directly through Onenote.

Free users who want to be able to edit the pages must create their own notebooks and then copy (not move) the desired tabs over to it. Close the shared notebook afterwards, otherwise any hyperlinks will try to point to the shared notebook rather than the local copy you just made.Β

Update v3.1:

I had a report that some links were still trying to point back to the shared notebook, even if it had been closed. I’ve since used Onetastic to try and replace thousands of the links with a relative path so that the links (when copied) will hopefully search the currently opened notebook first before falling back to the shared/absolute path. If this doesn’t work or if I missed a few, please let me know so I can continue to fix this.

  1. Hey. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing these great resources. This represents not a small amount of work and after having gone through a number of different campaign managers, using OneNote in has been an excellent solution. Making use of your templates has made the job that much easier. Thank you!

  2. Thanks for this, your work never ceases to amaze!

However, I was wondering if you could include more templates- adventure templates for adding your own adventures, homebrew templates for classes and races, etc etc.

    Thanks for your time

    – Sebastian

  3. Is copying the OneNote to a local Onedrive create a separate copy or does it conflict with your currently saved OneNote?

I greatly appreciate the work, but want to make sure before I start adding the stuff from my books and campaigns. πŸ™‚

  4. The way that I am copying it does not affect the original and appears to be more effective than copying each category.
Once you have opened the “Adventure Academy” follow these steps to save it to your Onedrive as a separate document than the original (also can be edited):
    1. Go to OneDrive Online https://onedrive.live.com
    2. Go to Recent
    3. Select the check box next to “Adventure Academy”
    4. On the top banner select ‘Copy To’
    5. Select the location you wish to save the document to.
    6. Go to the new location and open the document from there.
Now you should have your own editable version.

@Michael if this is incorrect please advise and delete the document. I made a simple change to see if it did reflect and I saw that it did not.

    1. After some tries of copying it, I must say that this is the best way to do it if you have the free version, just note that the copy takes some time.

  5. Hi,

I have been trying to follow the instructions to download the file, as I have had it downloaded previously but for some reason on my new PC and tablet, it is simply refusing to download/ locate the file, and copying to pages over isn’t working either, is there some other way to get access to this resource as I remember it being very useful, when I last had it.

  6. I’m having the same issue. I tried copying to my OneDrive, but OneNote won’t open it up. Looks like great work. Would love be able to use the templates.

  7. I have used OneNote for a while, but still a noob when it comes to how it works. I just want to check that if i download the file .onepkg file that i dont have to do anything else to it. Or do i still then need to do stuff before i can use it, ie copy and such. If so, how do it copy the tab groups?

    1. If you have an Office Subscription then you can open the .onepkg, unpack the notebook where ever you want and you’ll be all set. No need to copy tabs or anything.

If you are using the free version of Onenote then the .onepkg file won’t work since the free version can only use notebooks stored on Onedrive. When that’s the case you’ll need to use the shared version of the notebook instead, copying the tabs from that to your own notebook. AFAIK there is no way to copy Section Groups, you have to copy each tab individually (this is one of the reasons I tried to reduce the amount of tabs in some groups such as the spellbook).

  8. Thanks so much for everything Digital DM. I am still really struggling to get things set up though.

I have an Office 365 Subscription (Windows 10). I’ve spent ages trying to work out how to open the .onepkg file “wherever I want… no need to copy tabs or anything.”

When I double click on the downloaded 5e_srd_v3b.onepkg file, it says “How do you want to open this file?”, and doesn’t list Onenote as an option.

Next try: I opened Onenote first. I clicked “More notebooks”, and found the file. I opened your notebook that way no problem… except it remains read-only.

Third try: accepting that my Office Subscription wasn’t going to help me here, I have taken the time to copy over all the tabs into my own Notebook. Almost there. Then I closed Adventure Academy as instructed. Clicked on one of the hyperlinks… and it (very slowly) re-opens Adventure Academy, and links me to the page in the shared notebook (rather than the page in my own notebook).

I’m not very experienced with Onenote, so sorry if my question has an obvious answer, but is there any way to keep Adventure Academy from re-opening, and use those hyperlinks to my own notebook instead? There doesn’t seem much point to having the ability to edit my own version of the notebook if I can’t then use the links.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

  9. The version of OneNote that now ships with Office 365 appears to be the same as the free/online version, meaning the .onepkg file requires you to seek out an older version – this might start to be problematic.

Avery’s steps in the replies above work perfectly. I was about to accidentally replicate their post as I came to the same solution.

After step 6 you can then click Edit in OneNote to open it in your desktop app. It may take some time to fully sync.

  10. I’m with you on this I have spent almost a whole day trying to get the application both via the website and the apps on the Mac an dthe iPad to open or load these from my OneDrive but they absolutely do not load – just lots of errors. I must be doing something terribly wrong – I have the subscription but nothing is working.

    1. The Mac version is unable to open the .onepkg format AFAIK – only Windows and its desktop 2016 version of Onenote (not the app/UWP).
I can share the book directly through Onenote if you would like, that tends to work regardless of the OS or version. Would you like me to send it to your gmail?

      1. Hello, I am having a similar issue with getting the file on my MacBook. Could I also get the file directly, if it’s not much of a bother?

      2. I have a Mac and iPad as well that I have been trying to get it to work on. Would you be able to share it with me as well? This is an amazing resource that I would like to be able to edit in order to track my own campaign.

  11. Amazing stuff!!!!! I desired to start my own campaign b/c of you, me and my future players thank you!!!!

Do you have plans on including monsters/npc’s/equipment that has been released in xanathas guild or guild masters guide to ravnica?

    1. Thanks.

I’ve been adding some of the new monsters to my personal version of notebook, but there’s no way they’ll be in the public SRD version due to copyright reasons. If the official D&D SRD ever gets updated to include them then I’ll definitely add them to the Onenote SRD.

      1. That is amazing! And yes it’s a shame that with the rash of lawsuits the crackdown is herring the community. I’ve been using yours and building upon it too for my campaign creation.

  12. This looks super awesome but I have a Mac and have been unable to get it to open successfully using one note
app. is there a different download I could get to import it?

  13. Hello and thank you for your great work! I have downloaded this and love using it, however I have a question. Your templates will not let me resize the textbox and I can’t figure out why. I have used OneNote for several years and didn’t even know that this was an option. Do you have any ideas?

  14. I really like the icons used in the locations, like the skull, diamon, etc. Any chance you can share the source?

    1. https://www.onenote.com/download

Use the Desktop/other version, not the Windows Store / App version. The ‘paid’ portion of it is just having a Microsoft Office 365 subscription tied to your account (that link also has a link to getting a free one-month trial)

  15. Hey! This is an incredible resource thank you so much for making it. I’m having a slight problem getting it to open in the onenote app on my chrome book. I can open it in browser, and it adds to my recent files, but only in browser. Once in the onenote app on my chromebook, no sign of it. Im new to the onenote game, so any suggestions? Thanks!!

    1. I’m not too familiar with Chromebooks and how their storage/OS works. I assume if it has the Onenote app and can run it then it must have some way to access files saved to a MS Onedrive account. If you want I can try sharing the notebook through Onenote using the email attached to your comment, to see if that will open in your app.

  16. This looks awesome.
Spent and evening trying to get it to work but here I am.

I signed up for free onenote so i’m limited to “copy paste” the tabs.
But how does that work? There is no “copy” option, it’s greyed out.
Pls contact me i would love to get over this initial hurdle and start out.

  17. Hi, I’m another Mac user who can’t quite figure out how to get this on my local machine’s OneNote app.

I tried Avery’s solution above, but the notebook is not showing up in my “Recent” folder.

And of course, the “open in app” button fails due to lack of permissions.

  18. For macOS or iOS users trying to get a local copy going, here are the steps I used. Assumes you are using the latest version of OneNote:
    – log in to your Microsoft account in your web browser first.
    – come back here and click on the “Online Version” link. This should open the notebook in your web browser.
    – now you can open OneNote on your desktop or iOS device. Create the notebook that you will use for your local copy.
    – next, import the online notebook. In iOS select “More Notebooks” in the sidebar. For desktop, click the currently open notebook title, then “Add Notebook.” The “Adventure Academy” notebook should be in your recent notebooks
    – once you have the online notebook imported, start copying over to your local notebook. Once that is done you can close the online copy of “Adventure Academy”

  19. Hi,

Awesome project and something I started creating from scratch as I saw the value in OneNote from work when organizing stuff since I’m getting back in to D&D.

I was wondering if you could share the SRD version with me as I’m using the free version at home for this…and I’d like to shameless steal the templates.

    Thanks!

    JB

  20. Highly appreciate all your hard work, this thing has already saved me so much time!

I have a couple questions about the “new page” template after copying to a local notebook: Is there a way to edit the template itself? I see the SRD Template Short page but I can’t seem to find it in the Page Templates under Insert, yet it still knows which one to use. I’m trying to remove/enlarge the background page image you’ve used because I’m using 2016 with dark mode and the top left has the image with black over the rest of the page. I know I can manually enlarge the image on each page, but…y’know…hundreds of pages. I’ve tried searching around Google to no avail.

    1. Unfortunately Onenote templates do not work that way. They only determine what a new page will contain when it is first created – you can’t edit a template and have those changes automatically propagate to the rest of the notebook.
If you can locate the image’s block of text in the xml file, you might be able to find a macro that can go through and replace this value for each page of the notebook, but I’m not actually sure if this is possible.
Otherwise, manual work will be required (its a daunting process for sure, I’ve had to rebuild my book four different times with each theme overhaul πŸ˜ͺ).

  21. Just a web page usability comment: the ‘PINNED LINKS’ block on this page falls at the very very very very very bottom of the page if you are viewing on a portrait monitor.

  22. Hello! All of your work is appreciated and I am amazed with all the information it has and how much time it would of have taken. Question: How can I know what information is missing from the Player Handbook? I know that due to copyrighted content you didn’t include some stuff (Like in feats you only added Grappler and wrote that it is the only one in the SRD) so I added those.

    Thanks
