Sneak Peak: D&D Onenote SRD 3.0

I wanted to share a sneak peak of what I’ve spent the last two weeks working on. Version 3.0 of my notebook.

For this version of the notebook, every single page has been rebuilt in order to switch to a white-themed background template, which should look a bit sleeker and more modern while also appearing nicer on the newer app versions of Onenote (or the browser version which does not support page colors). Page reference numbers have been updated as well since the latest version of the SRD pdf would make for a 0-5 page difference.

The hierarchy of the book is has been changed a bit as well. For example, the Spellcasting information, Sorting Lists, and Spell directory all exist in the same Section Group now.

Also links. Links everywhere. Thousands of them. Every spell on the sorting list is a link (if the spell is in the SRD). Every monster on a list is a link, every spell on a statblock is a link, even the encounter blocks link back to themselves to save you an extra step while copying them to the combat tracker.

I’ve also spent more time on the character creation Section Group to make sure Races and Classes are formatted to my liking.

Finally, the entirety of the SRD is now part of a section group, as it includes a little Homebrew adventure module that can act as a template for how I set up an adventure (locations, character pages, etc). This setup means you can easily replace the content with your own adventure, and because the SRD is part of the notebook you can quickly link to monsters, spells, magic items, etc.

    1. That I’m not sure yet. The SRD is about 98% complete (I just need to throw in the page templates, then go through it all to make sure I didn’t forget anything), but the adventure part of it still has a ways to go.

I might split it off into two books, one that is just the SRD so that it can be released in a matter of days, and one that is a Campaign + Planner that includes the SRD which will hopefully be ready by Sept or Oct.

      1. I Like the idea of two books. This has been extremely helpful in the creation of campaigns and referencing materials. Especially when you have a bard that doesn’t remember their spell abilities. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      2. Hey, no mean to be a pain in the ass but I can’t help my excitement – How’s work coming along for the Campaign + Planner?

  1. How do you get your one note pages to look so great? I canโ€™t find half of the features and details youโ€™ve used. All Iโ€™ve been able to do is take screenshots of the D&D pdf books and drag them into my notebooks. It looks like crap. I canโ€™t figure out how to link tables to other sections or change the background color or any of the stuff you have been able to do. And when I try to download and open the Onenote files in Onenote my computer says thereโ€™s no application compatible to open it. I wish I had the time and knowledge to do my Onenote the way you have

    1. As far as I know, there are some page formatting options that are currently only found in the Desktop 2016 program, not the Windows 10 / UWP app. You can download the program at:
      https://support.office.com/en-us/article/install-or-reinstall-onenote-2016-for-windows-c08068d8-b517-4464-9ff2-132cb9c45c08

If you have the program, then I have some blog posts about how I format pages here:

The same goes for opening the .onepkg files – they require the desktop program along with a subscription to Microsoft Office, a combination which lets you save notebooks anywhere on your computer. I think its Windows only too, rather than Mac. If you’re using the Windows 10 app or the free version of Onenote, then Notebooks can only be stored and shared via the Onedrive cloud. If you would like, I can share the notebook with you that way.

Unfortunately, soon Microsoft will force the inferior app and its cloud-only saves on everyone ๐Ÿ™
